The HMTM was founded in 1846 as the Royal Conservatory of Music, later elevated to university status in 1924, and received its current name in 1998 . Today it’s a public state institution, training approximately 1,079 students (SoSe 2023) with 103 professors among a total of 592 staff as of 2022 .

The main headquarters is housed in the historic Führerbau building at Arcisstraße 12, once the Nazi Führerbau, now repurposed for concerts and teaching. Additional facilities are located at Luisenstraße, the Gasteig cultural centre, Prinzregententheater (theatre studies), and the Ballet Academy on Wilhelmstraße.
