The HMTM was founded in 1846 as the Royal Conservatory of Music, later elevated to university status in 1924, and received its current name in 1998 . Today it’s a public state institution, training approximately 1,079 students (SoSe 2023) with 103 professors among a total of 592 staff as of 2022 .

The main headquarters is housed in the historic Führerbau building at Arcisstraße 12, once the Nazi Führerbau, now repurposed for concerts and teaching.
