The University was founded in the year 1969 and is a liberal arts University. The founders of University of North Georgia are Father James Gower, and local businessman Les Brewer. The first class of the University started in the year 1972 with only 32 students being enrolled in the University. The University is a well-known University of the region.

International students applying to University of North Georgia are eligible for both F1 and J1 Visa depending on the course they have applied.
