Step-by-Step Guide to Admission Requirements at Warren Wilson College

Online Application Form (Common App + Writing Supplement)

Start with the Common Application. Warren Wilson does away with an application fee, making things simpler. Be sure to complete their writing supplement thoughtfully—it’s not a checkbox. That optional prompt gives you room to explain how your experiences, community engagement, or passions shaped you—and why they matter to W&L.

2. Official High School Transcript (or GED)

You must submit your official transcript showing your graduation date. Warren Wilson evaluates applicants holistically, welcoming GPAs from ~2.5 to 4.0—but they ask for a college-prep curriculum: English, algebra, lab sciences, social sciences, and ideally a foreign language.

3. Letter of Recommendation (Counselor or Teacher)

Only one recommendation is encouraged—not required. But if you can submit up to three, even better. Choose someone who knows you beyond the grades—someone who can speak to your curiosity, character, or leadership. These help the admissions team see who you are.

4. Standardized Test Scores (Optional—SAT/ACT)

Warren Wilson is test-optional. That means you don’t have to submit your SAT or ACT. But if your score strengthens your profile, go ahead and send it. They use it as one of many pieces of the puzzle, not the centerpiece.

5. Proof of English Proficiency (International Applicants Only)

If English isn't your first language or your schooling wasn’t in English, you must show proficiency. Acceptable options include:

TOEFL iBT (79+)

IELTS (6.5+)

Duolingo (100+)

Other tests like ITEP, GTEC, or SAT/ACT reading scores in lieu

All documents must be in English or accompanied by certified translations.

Notable Innovation

01.
Sustainably Harvested Tools & Furniture from Campus Forest

Students working in fine woodworking and forest crews take timber from Warren Wilson’s own 600-acre managed forest. They mill, sculpt, and build chairs, bowls, pens, and more—literally building functional objects from campus-grown trees. It’s local, sustainable, educational—and the result is physical craftsmanship shaped by environmental stewardship. That’s invention rooted in land.

Tree Inventory & Carbon Sequestration Analysis

Taking sustainability seriously, the college cataloged over 1,153 trees across campus, tagging each one and measuring trunk diameter. The result? An assessment valuing $11 million in structural integrity, and calculating that the campus landscape stores 2,419 tons of carbon—and sequesters 68 tons per year. That’s an inventive use of data to chart environmental footprint in real time.

The college’s working 110-acre farm is both agriculturally productive and a living classroom.
