Western New England University was officially established in 1919 as a Springfield Division of Northeastern College which was known as Springfield-Northeastern. Northeastern University's Springfield Division changed its name to Western New England College in 1951. On July 1, 2011, the college officially changed its name from Western New England College to Western New England University to reflect its master's and doctorate programs.

  Western New England University campus spans 215-acre at Springfield. The campus of Western New England University is made up of 24 significant buildings and various sports and recreation areas. The campus of Western New England University is situated close to the Wilbraham border, in a suburban area four miles outside of downtown Springfield. A large portion of the campus's land is still undeveloped woodland and open area. There are seven academic buildings and 10 housing halls or complexes. The oldest campus buildings are predominantly constructed of red brick in a neoclassical architectural style, while the newer structures integrate a mix of modern architectural styles.

D'Amour Library supports the academic program as well as the instructional and research needs of the University community in an effort to embody the overall goal of Western New England University.
