Xiangtan University (XTU), located in Xiangtan, Hunan, was founded in 1958 at the initiative of Mao Zedong, who also inscribed its name. Although operations were suspended in 1959, the university was revived in 1974 with support from national leaders like Deng Xiaoping.

Xiangtan University was founded in 1958 in Xiangtan, Hunan Province, under the initiative of Mao Zedong, who also inscribed the university’s name and supported its development.
In 1978, Xiangtan University was designated as one of the first 16 national comprehensive key universities by the State Council, highlighting its importance in China’s higher education landscape.
The university ceased operations in 1959 due to a decision by the provincial government. It was later reconstructed in 1974 with approval from central leaders such as Deng Xiaoping and Li Xiannian.
