Completed Bachelor’s Degree from Accredited Institution

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or recognized international equivalent. 

Official Transcripts from All Institutions Attended

Must submit all undergraduate (and any prior graduate) transcripts. For foreign institutions, credentials may need evaluation. 

Minimum GPA

Commonly minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on 4.0 scale) for most programs. Some programs may require higher or waive if remedial work done. 

Proof of English Proficiency (for Non-Native Speakers)

Acceptable tests: TOEFL (PBT or iBT), IELTS, Duolingo; minimum scores vary. Exceptions may apply if applicant’s prior education was in English. 

Letters of Recommendation

Often 2-3 letters recommended; sometimes specific form (e.g. departmental) or from professional / academic referees. 

Statement of Purpose / Personal Objectives

Many graduate programs require a statement or essay explaining goals, background, research / professional interests. 

Standardized Tests (when required)

GRE, GMAT or other test scores may be required, depending on the program. Some departments waive them. 

Program-Specific Prerequisites

Some graduate programs require specific prerequisites. Example: Civil Engineering PhD requires prior calculus, acceptable GRE, good grades in relevant quantitative coursework. 

Credential Evaluation for Foreign Transcripts

International applicants often must submit foreign transcripts that are certified / evaluated either via FAU’s internal process or an external agency. 

Application Deadline / Submission of All Supporting Documents

Graduate programs have specific deadlines and require all materials (transcripts, test scores, recommendations etc.) by these deadlines. Applicants must ensure no missing documents.
