Formerly called Guru Ghasidas University (GGU), established by an Act of the State Legislative Assembly, was formally inaugurated on June 16, 1983.

The university is located in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, spread over approximately 655 acres. The campus is located 5 km from the main town and is adorned with gardens, meadows, ponds, and ornamental trees following a bio-aesthetic plan. The campus includes an Academic Complex, a Computer Centre, separate hostels for boys and girls, an Administrative wing, a Guest House, the Forestry complex, staff quarters, and the V.C. Lodge. The campus is fully Wi-Fi enabled and provides amenities such as a central library, cafeteria, bank facilities, bus services, and a post office.
The university provides six hostels, three each for boys and girls separately, accommodating approximately 800 boys and 800 girls. Hostels are supervised by faculty members as Wardens. Facilities include purified drinking water, nutritious and hygienic mess, high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity, recreation rooms, 24x7 security, and clean washrooms. Specific hostels like Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Boy's Hostel accommodates up to 200 students and Rajmohini Devi Girls Hostel accommodates up to 400 students. Hostel fee is Rs. 12,000 (Rs. 10,000 yearly + Rs. 2,000 refundable caution money).
