Frequently Asked Questions

Lake Superior State University is Michigan's smallest public university by choice, located in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, at the gateway to the Great Lakes and bordering Ontario, Canada. The campus sits in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, bordering North America's largest freshwater inland lake, Lake Superior. LSSU focuses on undergraduate students and offers small classes that afford hands-on learning, with tuition costs among the lower third of Michigan's public universities, yet the university "feels" like a private college due to its smaller size.
LSSU offers a student-to-faculty ratio of 13 to 1 and provides superior quality programs taught by highly-qualified, committed faculty who treat students with respect, challenge their thinking, and judge their own success by what students achieve. The inviting campus features networked and state-of-the-art facilities where students prepare for meaningful careers with relevant experiences linked to the real world, all within an inclusive atmosphere that enhances the quality of life of the Great Lakes region and the world.
The primary factors used to determine admission are cumulative grade point average (GPA), high school course curriculum, and ACT or SAT results. LSSU recommends that students follow a college preparatory curriculum mirroring the Michigan Merit Curriculum. The middle 50 percent of entering freshmen typically have high school GPAs ranging from 2.7 to 3.3 and ACT scores ranging from 18-24. ACT or SAT scores will not be used in the admissions process if a student graduated from high school two or more years ago.
Transfer students must possess a 2.00 cumulative college GPA and be eligible to return to their former college(s). A transfer student is defined as a student who enrolls in a postsecondary institution anytime after the summer following high school graduation. If a student has completed fewer than 19 semester (29 quarter) hours of credit, they must also send an official high school transcript or GED scores in addition to their college transcript. The complete application should be submitted at least 30 days prior to the semester of entry. Students seeking federal financial aid need to supply a final high school transcript or GED score report if transferring fewer than 60 credits without an earned associate degree.
On-campus housing at LSSU includes Brady Hall and Osborn Hall with regular room (double, triple, and quad occupancy) and private room rates, as well as the Student Village, Townhouses, Living Learning Communities, and Apartments. All rooms are furnished with twin extra long beds (36"x80"), desks, chairs, wardrobes/dressers, window coverings, smoke detectors, ethernet ports, local and 800 number phone access, and digital cable ports. On-campus apartments, townhouses, Student Village suites, and the Living Learning Community houses include additional furnishings. Students living on campus are part of a community where they can live, learn, and thrive, supported by the Residence Life & Housing team dedicated to creating an environment where students feel a sense of belonging, growth, and safety.
Yes, students must select a meal plan if they live on campus, and the cost of the meal plan is included in the Room and Board Contract along with housing charges. For security, the Public Safety Department provides 24-hour service for the convenience of students. The office is located at the west end of the Administration Building and staff may be reached at any time on campus by dialing x2100, or from off campus by dialing 906-635-2100. In case of an extreme emergency, students should dial 911 or 9-911 from an on-campus phone.
Yes, Optional Practical Training (OPT) is available to F-1 students while completing their program of study or upon completion of their program of study for up to 12 months. Full-time students must be enrolled for one academic year before they can be eligible for OPT. Additionally, LSSU offers 80 STEM-designated programs eligible for the 24-month OPT extension, allowing eligible graduates to extend their post-completion OPT by an additional 24 months for a total of up to 36 months of work authorization in the United States.
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) requires that full-time students must be enrolled for one academic year before they can be eligible for CPT. International students on an F-1 visa are eligible for on-campus employment only if they are full-time students who maintain appropriate academic standing, and employment must be directly affiliated with Lake Superior State University and serve its students. Employment cannot exceed 20 hours per week while school is in session. F-1 students must go to Human Resources for on-campus employment authorization.
