discovery and clarification of the significance of transaction costs and property rights for the institutional structure and functioning of the economy

"For his discovery and clarification of the significance of transaction costs and property rights for the institutional structure and functioning of the economy," Ronald Coase (1910–2013) received the 1991 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. After completing the LSE's BComm degree in 1932, he taught economics there until 1951, when he left for the United States. His career as one of the most renowned economists of the 20th century began with his short but incredibly significant essay, "The Nature of the Firm" (1937), written while he was employed at LSE.
