Everything You Need to Know About Application Requirements at University of Malta

1. International students applying for undergraduate programmes at the University of Malta (UM) must hold a recognised secondary school qualification that provides access to higher education in their home country and is considered comparable to Malta’s Matriculation Certificate.

2. Applicants must also satisfy the specific subject requirements of their chosen programme; these may include particular Advanced or Intermediate Level subjects and grades. International qualifications are individually evaluated by UM for comparability.

3. Since English is the language of instruction, applicants who completed their secondary education overseas are generally required to provide a recognised Secure English Language Test (SELT).

4. For undergraduate admission, the current requirements include IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with 6.0 in Writing and 5.5 in Reading, Listening and Speaking, or equivalent scores such as TOEFL iBT 80 under the pre January 2026 scale, PTE Academic 65 with at least 59 in each component, or ISET Band 5.

5. Applicants must apply online, select the relevant overseas qualification category and submit the documents required for their chosen course. Programme specific requirements apply for example, science, medicine, engineering and language programmes may require particular subjects and grades.

6. Applicants who do not meet the direct entry requirements may be eligible for the Certificate in Foundation Studies, which provides a pathway to undergraduate study.

7. Non EU applicants who require a visa should apply well before the relevant deadline.
