The founding of the University of Wales by Royal Charter in 1893 was considered one of the most significant political and social events of the nineteenth century, and it was made possible by the perseverance, passion for learning, and generosity of common Welsh people. With a lengthy and illustrious history, the University of Wales has contributed significantly to the growth of higher education in Wales. The University supported the promotion and celebration of Wales' language, heritage, and culture through the University of Wales Press, Gregynog Hall (bequeathed to the University in the 1960s), Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru (The Welsh Dictionary), and the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies (CAWCS). The initial strategic goal of merging two ancient universities to form a single University for Wales was fulfilled in August 2017 when the University of Wales and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David both accepted a deed of merger. In order to advance a radical new educational system that meets the unique needs of Wales while simultaneously offering programs that are appealing to students from all over the UK and beyond, the redesigned university will build upon the quality and legacy of its founding institutions.
