Introduction

The Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria combines tradition with an orientation towards the future. It is a young and dynamic public institution that keeps strong connections within its socio-economic context while looking for internationalization. Located on the Messina Strait, at the heart of the Mediterranean Area, it aims to be an internationally reputed European research University and to provide high-quality education for both domestic and international students. Its strength lies in its integrated range of disciplines that result in interesting opportunities for interdisciplinarity in research and teaching. Research and teaching specializations are evident in the Ph.D. programs.

History

It was founded in 1968 and is one of the youngest universities in the country. UNIRC combines its commitment to research and teaching: three faculties (Architecture, Engineering, Agricultural Science), are dedicated to the territory, creating an "Environment Polytechnic" with a strong propensity to the themes of architecture, landscape, urbanism, infrastructure associated at the green economy. The faculty of Law, study from the economic issues to those related to archeology and artistic heritage. The university provides undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate education, in addition to a range of double degree programs.

Achievement

In modern-day evolutionary research, which places the University in a crucial position concerning the impact on territorial development, where the proliferation of interconnected actions and visions, strategic planning, and coordination of activities have assumed fundamental importance.

The University has identified in its Strategic Plan 2017-2019 two Strategic guide-lines related to Mission B - Research, Innovation, and Third Mission:

B1 - Supporting basic research and encouraging applied research

B2 – Strengthening the capacity to develop cooperation with companies and institutions, accessing new sources of funding, and encouraging the integration of researchers into the world of work

Structures, Deputy Rectors, Directors, Project Directors of axis and actors of the AQ System coordinate activities in support of research and technology transfer to achieve the objectives defined by the strategic planning and consistent with the quality policies.

Housing Services

The University has recently established the University College, which is located near the campus, not far from the historic city center, and manages accommodation. The function of the College is not only to provide accommodation for the students who are entitled to it but also to organize events and services that promote the social and cultural integration of students and their active participation in university life, not only in their educational commitments but also in their recreational time. Places in the College are assigned at the beginning of each academic year, in line with a means test.

Library

The Università Mediterranea houses libraries and reference work can be carried out using the system “Unique Catalogue online”. This system enables students to research the bibliographic material and publications in possession of the University libraries and expands the information services offered to the academic community (students, teachers, staff) as well as to external users. It also facilitates access to the wealth of publications and reviews, which specialize in the scientific disciplines studied at the courses offered by the University Mediterranea. Reference work can be done from any location connected to the Internet and allows the localization of documents in real-time. In addition, OPAC offers a range of additional services, which allow an online checking on the availability of a publication, the storing of one’s research, and checking the current loans available. This system also suggests the books that could be useful for students to buy.

Campus Location and Landmarks

Reggio, the most populated urban area of Calabria, lies on the southernmost tip of the peninsular, between the slopes of the Aspromonte range and the eastern shore of the Straits of Messina. It is a fertile area thanks to its mild climate and the availability of water, in which olives, vines, and citrus fruits are grown and in particular bergamot, a plant that grows exclusively in the coastal area between Reggio and Gioiosa Jonica. Student services

There are 4 Libraries: one for each faculty, with a collection of about 60,000 monographs, 500 periodicals, some 5,000 electronic journals, and databases disciplines.

Also, Learning Centres: the space is a public meeting and at the same time of cultural production. Individual and group study, meetings and conferences, multimedia presentations, video conferencing, online consultation.

Within the University Campus, there are 3 cafes open until late afternoon, offering both a bar and canteen service at reasonable prices. By passing a means test students can avail of the services at a reduced price.

Transportation

The students and staff of the University can use the free shuttle service that connects the city to the University Campus. Two bus lines link the airport to the campus for the Architecture, Engineering, and Agricultural Science Departments. Bus stops for these bus lines are at the central station, the maritime station, and not far from the headquarters of the Department of Law and Economics.

Sports & Cultural Activities

Located on the campus of the Mediterranea there is a gym called the “MedìClub”, situated below the Aula Magna of the University “Antonio Quistelli”. It has a training area of over 350 square meters and is provided with an extensive range of equipment, locker rooms with services, and can be accessed both from the campus and from the city. The campus also has a five-a-side football field and an outdoor volleyball court.

The Youth Policy Commission organizes several cultural activities and initiatives in collaboration with the cultural associations in the area. The University also co-manages the Cine Theatre Politeama Syracuse, a strategically located space of experience which, through different artistic events in differing languages, provides stimuli for reflection and creativity, not only for academics but for all citizens. It thus serves as a modern and dynamic cultural centre. There are also several equally important student associations, whose activities align with the cultural demands of young people.
