Catawba College's history started in 1851 with the North Carolina Classis of the Reformed church in the United States. The college became an academy in 1865, operating as Catawba high School, and in 1890 it became a coeducational center. Now the college is affiliated with the united church of Christ, the successor to the Evangelicalical and the reformed church itself in the United States.
