St. Lawrence University History

St. Lawrence University was founded as a "Preparatory Department" to lay the groundwork for theological studies. The seminary closed in 1965 with the Unitarian/Universalist merger, and that department became today's liberal arts university. St. Lawrence University was founded in 1856 by Universalist Church leaders who wanted to establish a seminary west of New England and were enthusiastically courted by Canton residents.

 St. Lawrence University's 1,000-acre (400-hectare) campus is located on the south side of Canton. The main developed area, which is centred along Park Street, accounts for only 20% of the total campus area. The majority of this area is a "walking campus" that is not accessible by motorized vehicles. Cross-campus traffic is limited to Park Street (north-south), Romoda Drive, and University Avenue, which are located on the outskirts of campus (east-west). Park Street, Hillside Avenue, College Street, Lincoln Street, and Maple Street connect the school to downtown Canton as well as major roads like US Route 11, NY Route 68, NY Route 310, and County Route 27. The university has 30 academic residential, sports, and recreation facilities.

St. Lawrence University Libraries

    Owen D. Young Library, Launders Science Library, and the Music Library are the three libraries at St. Lawrence University. The Owen D. Young Library (ODY) is the main campus library, offering resources and services for humanities and social sciences research and study. The university's Special Collections and Archives, Digital Scholarship Team, Center for Teaching and Learning, Information Technology, and WORD Studio are also housed in the library. The Launders Science Library in Fox Hall promotes study and research in the physical and natural sciences, psychology, technology, and science history. The Music Library serves the Music department's educational, research, and performance needs, as well as providing music resources to the entire university community.

St. Lawrence University Medical services

  Health Center provides medical services to St. Lawrence University. The Health Center is an ambulatory care facility with nurse practitioners, a physician assistant, and nurses on staff. The college physician is only available part-time. All registered students have access to services. Exams are free of charge. Medication, laboratory testing, and x-rays may incur additional charges. Faculty, staff, and students have access to first aid services. Acute Care for Illness and Injury, Immunizations, Allergy Injections, Woman's Health including gynecological care, birth control, emergency contraception, STD and HIV Testing: female and male, Travel Medicine, Referral to Medical Specialists, Health Education and Counseling are all available at the St. Lawrence University Health Center.

St. Lawrence University Students clubs

     St. Lawrence University has a number of student clubs. St. Lawrence University has over 100 student activity groups. St. Lawrence University is home to the nation's second oldest collegiate outing club (second only to Dartmouth College). During "Peak Weekend," students climb all 46 Adirondack peaks over 4,000 feet (1,200 metres). Peak Weekend in St. Lawrence recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. The Outing Club also has its own campus residence, which is part of the Theme Cottages. Skiing, hiking, rafting, and other outdoor activities are frequently sponsored by the club. On campus, the Student Government is also very active.

    You will be issued an I-20 once you have been admitted to St. Lawrence University and have completed all of the necessary paperwork.    The residential experience is essential to the educational process at St. Lawrence University, which is a four-year residential university. During each semester at the university, students are required to live in university residence halls, theme cottages, or Greek chapter houses. Each residential area has a residential coordinator (RC) who supervises, leads, and supports the residents in their units while also performing administrative duties for their buildings. Undergraduate students who work as community assistants (CA) assist RCs.
