Aligarh Muslim University History

Aligarh Muslim University also known as AMU is an Indian higher education establishment located in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. The university was established in 1875 as Muhammadan Anglo Oriental College by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and adopted its present name in 1919. The university currently enrols over 22000 students.

Aligarh Muslim University also comprises of 15 research centers, 10 schools, and 3 institutes in addition to 7 affiliated colleges including Zakir Hussain College of Engineering & Technology, Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College, Community College, and Academic Staff College.

Aligarh Muslim University has an urban campus spread over an area of 1155 acres in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh in addition to three smaller facilities in Malappuram, Murshidabad, and Kishanganj. The university campus is home to a number of buildings inspired from the Islamic architectural style housing the faculties, student services, and university administrative offices.

Aligarh Muslim University offers a range of facilities for students which include 80 hostels, 19 halls of residence, dining halls, common rooms, reading rooms, sports clubs, and literary societies. The university also houses a museum in addition to libraries, mosque, cricket ground, hockey pitch, art gallery, auditorium, and Cultural Education Center.
