Anna University History
Anna University is a technical university located in the metropolitan city of Chennai in India. The university was established by the state government in 1978 from the Engineering faculty of University of Madras. The university adopted its present name in 1982 and is one of the leading universities in India.
Anna University Programs, Courses, and Schools
Anna University comprises of 8 faculties offering a wide range of courses at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral level. The faculties are Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Technology, Faculty of Information and Communication Engineering, Faculty of Science and Humanities, Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Faculty of Architecture and Planning.
Anna University is also home to over 40 research centres and institutes which cater to the research and academic community. Some of the research centres include Centre for Nano Science and Technology, AU-KBC Research Centre, Centre for Technology Development and Transfer, Crystal Growth Centre, Centre for Women Empowerment, Centre for Aerospace Research, and Centre for University-Industry Collaboration.
Anna University Campuses
Anna University has its primary campus located in the suburb of Guindy in Chennai and a satellite campus in Chromepet. The campus is largely urban and is spread over an area of 185 acres next to the cosmopolitan city of Chennai. The campus houses faculties, administrative buildings, and sports facilities in addition to laboratories and open green spaces.
Anna University Library was established in the year 1978 and is spread over 4122 square meters of area. The university library comprises of a wide range of resources such as references, bibliographies, journals, databases, CDR Databases, books, and periodicals in both print and digital formats.
Anna University Achievements
Anna University has been at the forefront of producing graduates who have become industry leaders and top government officials such as Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Dr. Verghese Kurein. University graduates are highly sought after in the job market.
Anna University is ranked amongst the top 700 universities in the world and 85th in BRICS nations by QS World University Rankings. Nationally, the National Institute of Research Framework (NIRF) ranks the institution 8th in Engineering, 28th in Business Management, and 10th overall.
Anna University USP
Anna University is a selective institution with a low acceptance rate, especially for engineering programs. The university’s tuition fee is also affordable as compared to its western counterparts. The university also offers some scholarships to meritorious students.
Anna University launched its own satellite in April 2009 called the ANUSAT which is aimed at demonstrations in auxiliary technology. The development of the project was handled by ISRO or Indian Space Research Organization which is India’s leading government space agency.
