Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University History

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University before known as the University of Port Elizabeth is a South African university. Plans for the University were first disclosed in 2002, by then Minister of Education, Kader Asmal. The offering was a part of a larger plan to reform higher education in South Africa. On 20 July 2017, the name of the University was formally changed from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University to Nelson Mandela University.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University offers 69 Faculties, Schools and Departments. The University also offers Short Courses and Special Programmes.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Campuses

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University has six campuses in which five of them are situated in Port Elizabeth, and one is in George. The South, North and Second Avenue campuses are all situated in summer strand, Port Elizabeth close to the beach. The South Campus is the main campus of the University. The North Campus is located near to the South Campus. The Missionvale Campus is between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage. The Bird Street Campus was utilized by Rhodes University, prior to becoming the initial campus of the University of Port Elizabeth. The George Campus has located 8 km outside the city center.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Achievements and USP

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University students registered for an undergraduate degree or diploma may qualify for a Student Merit Bursary if their academic performance continues to be of a high standard. Students qualify for the Student Merit Award only in respect of their first undergraduate qualification. These bursaries will be allocated for one year at a time a student must qualify a new for the bursary every year.
