Established in 1818, the Saint Louis University (SLU) is a private Roman Catholic four-year research university with campuses in St. Louis, Missouri, United States and Madrid, Spain. It is the oldest university west of the Mississippi River and the second-oldest Jesuit university in the United States. The university is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. In addition to its main location in Missouri, the university also has a campus in Madrid, Spain, where students can study for the entirety of their college career or for just a semester.

SLU offers about 100 undergraduate programs and 80 post-baccalaureate programs, along with programs adapted to working adults at both the undergraduate and graduate levels including 25 completely online programs. The university comprises of various schools, colleges and centers: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Philosophy and Letters, Doisy College of Health Sciences, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, Center for Advanced Dental Education, Albert Gnaegi Center for Health Care Ethics, College for Public Health & Social Justice, School of Social Work, John Cook School of Business, School of Education, School of Law, Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology, School for Professional Studies, Center for Outcomes Research, Center for Sustainability. The most popular majors at Saint Louis University include: Health Professions and Related Programs; Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services; Engineering; Biological and Biomedical Sciences; and Parks, Recreation, Leisure and Fitness Studies.

The total student population at the university is more than 17,000 students of which over 12,000 are enrolled in the undergraduate programs. The student to faculty ratio at the university is 11:1 and the acceptance rate is 63%.
