University of Madras History

University of Madras is located in the beautiful city of Chennai, India. It was established in the year 1857 during the British rule in India. It is one of the oldest and prominent Universities in India providing education beyond excellence. Slowly and gradually, it emerged as one of the leading Universities emphasizing on research in the fields of drug development and technology.

University of Madras Programs, Courses and Schools

University of Madras comprises of 18 schools, 121 colleges, innumerable faculties and several department and centres. The University offers wide range of programs at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. Various programs taught at the University include Education, Literature, Business Management, Fine Arts, International Business, Geology, Sports, Computer Science, Public Administration, Media, History and Political Science. Communication, Journalism, Medical and Health Sciences, Nanotechnology, Biochemistry, Physics and many more.
The university caters national research centres for Nanotechnology, Photonics and Neurotoxicity. The University also has three major centres for advanced studies of Bio Physics, Botany and Mathematics. The University is affiliated to UGC, NAAC and AIU. It owes more than hundred Research centres.

University of Madras Campuses

University of Madras has six beautiful campuses namely Chepauk, Marina, Guindy, Taramani, Chetput and Maduravoyal. All these campuses are scattered all over the city. The University owns a Senate House, which is a historic monument representing European architecture. These campuses represents state of art infrastructure. Several facilities for the students are there like book stores, medicine shops and a beautiful chapel for the students.

The campus boasts four Central Libraries at Chepauk, Marina, Guindy, Taramani campuses. The Central libraries of the University is fully furnished and digitalised. It is loaded with e-books, e-journals, manuscripts, reference books, subscriptions, government gazettes, journals, books and papers. The library also hosts Tamil manuscripts inscribed on palm leaves, copper plates, tea barks etc.
