University of Oslo is a public university which was established in the year 1811 and is located in the Norwegian capital of Oslo. The university is considered as the oldest university in Norway and until 2016 it was the largest Norwegian institution of higher education in terms of size.  

University of Oslo consists of eight schools, or faculties: Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Educational Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Theology.  Most of the university's other faculties are located at the newer Blindern campus in the suburban West End. The Faculty of Medicine is split between several university hospitals in the Oslo area. The university has the following eight research centers and other special units: Norwegian Centre for Violence and Traumatic Stress Studies, Centre for International Climate and Environmental Research, The Biotechnology Centre of Oslo, Centre for Gender Research, Norwegian Institute in Rome, Barony Rosendal, Molecular Life Science, International Summer School. 

University of Oslo has more than 28,000 students which include a diverse student population studying bachelors and masters programs. The university has more than 6,000 faculty members.

University of Oslo provides scholarship opportunities to the students on the basis of academic excellence. The university has four libraries; Library of Medicine and Health Science, Library of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Law Library, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Library, and five museums; Mineralogical-geological Museum, Paleontological Museum, Zoological Museum, Botanical Garden, and the Botanical Museum.
