University of Science Malaysia History and Background:
The University of Science Malaysia (USM) is a public research university which was established in the year 1969 and is located in Penang, Malaysia. The idea of a university was first raised by D. S. Ramanathan in 1959 in the State Assembly and later formed when he was nominated as the chairman of the Penang University Project committee. The university was first known as Universiti Pulau Pinang but later on, changed to Universiti Sains Malaysia. 

University of Science Malaysia Programs, Courses, and Schools:
The University of Science Malaysia offers courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to more than 20,000 students. Universiti Sains Malaysia teaches in the fields of Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Building Science and Technology, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Education as well as conducts research. The programs that are offered to the students are; Medicine, Dentistry and Health, Sciences, Engineering, and Arts. Along with on-campus studying opportunities, the students are also facilitated by the distance learning opportunity. The students can also opt for the summer programs which are mainly conducted abroad.

The university has 24 academic schools, 14 centres, and 7 units. Of the schools, 12 are applied science and technology-based schools: Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Materials and Mineral Resources Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Housing, Building, and Planning; Industrial Technology; Medical Sciences; Dental Sciences; Health Sciences; and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The three liberal arts schools are Educational Studies, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The pure science schools are Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Computer Sciences, and Physics, all of which offer courses that are similar to those available in other universities. 

University of Science Malaysia Campuses: 
The University of Science Malaysia is among the oldest institute of higher learning (IHL) in Northern Malaysia. The university has three campuses, the main campus on the island of Penang, a health campus in Kelantan, and an engineering campus in Nibong Tebal. There is an overseas collaboration with KLE University, India offering the Doctor of Medicine (USM) undergraduate degree. The university also plans to open a Global Campus located at Kuala Lumpur Education City (KLCE). 

The university also comprises a library which was established in 1969 and is known as the Library of the University of Penang at the Malayan Teachers College. The University of Sains Malaysia also consists of many different research centres like; Malaysian Institute of Pharmaceuticals and Nutraceuticals, Centre for Drug Research, Centre for Instructional Technology and Multimedia, National Higher Education Research Institute, Centre for Global Archaeological Research, Centre for Policy Research and International Studies (CenPRIS), Centre For Chemical Biology (CCB), Centre For Marine & Coastal Studies (CEMACS), Advanced Medical & Dental Institute (AMDI), Science & Engineering Research Centre(SERC), and many more. The university has affiliations with the following international universities: The University of Indonesia (UI) collaborates with the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) on SUSS’s BA Malay Language and Literature.

University of Science Malaysia Achievements: 
The University of Science Malaysia is the only Accelerated Programs for Excellence (APEX) government-funded autonomous university in Malaysia. IPPTN, a center of excellence at USM, has been recognized as one of the ten centers in the world which have been awarded Certified ATLAS.ti Training Organization (CATO). 

University of Science Malaysia USP:
The University of Science Malaysia provides scholarship opportunities to the students on the basis of academic excellence. The university offers different activities and facilities to the students like student accommodation, sporting, and recreation. Other activities include cultural activities, leadership programs, community service programs, and excellence programs with the co-operation of the Student Advisory and Development Unit, the Sports Unit, the Arts and Cultural Development Unit, Hostel Management. Activities are realized through societies, clubs, sports and cultural activities, motivation workshops and debate competitions.
