Oberlin College is one of the oldest private liberal arts colleges and music conservatories which is located in Oberlin, Ohio.

Oberlin College History

Oberlin Institute, founded in 1833, was the forerunner to Oberlin College. The founders of Oberlin College wrote extensively and were prominently featured in the press, particularly in the abolitionist newspaper The Liberator, in which the name Oberlin appeared 352 times by 1865. Original documents and correspondence have been preserved and are widely available. 346 In 1943, Robert Samuel Fletcher (class of 1920) published a history that became a landmark and the starting point for all subsequent studies of Oberlin's history.

Oberlin College Programs, Courses, and Schools

Among Oberlin College's nearly 3,000 students, nearly 2,400 are enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences, slightly more than 400 in the Conservatory of Music, and the remaining 180 or so in both the College and the Conservatory as part of the five-year Double-Degree program.

Over 50 majors, minors, and concentrations are available in the College of Arts and Sciences. Over the last ten years, the most popular majors based on students graduating with a given major have been (in order) English, Biology, History, Politics, and Environmental Studies. The science programs at the college are regarded as excellent, particularly in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The college is home to the first undergraduate Neuroscience program in the world.

Oberlin College Achievements/USP

In the 2020 edition of U.S. News & World Report's "Best Colleges" ranking, Oberlin was ranked tied for 33rd best national liberal arts college, tied for 11th for "Most Innovative," and tied for 12th best in undergraduate teaching among liberal arts colleges. Oberlin College's USP/Achievements seeks students who are talented, highly motivated, personally mature, and tolerant of opposing viewpoints. The conservatory, in particular, seeks talented musicians with significant potential for future growth and development. Performance is central to all curricula, including music education, history, theory, composition, and technology.

Shanks Health and Wellness Center, adjacent to the Jesse Philips Physical Education Center, provides Oberlin College sports and fitness services, including a new 25 yards by 25 yards pool and Cooper Recreation Lane. Oberlin College Health and Well-being 

 Student Health and Counseling Center provide health and well-being services at Oberlin College. The center includes Student Health Services, Counseling & Psychological Services, and a comprehensive wellness education team. The Counseling Center's primary purpose is to provide assessment and short-term counseling, with referrals to private counselors in the Oberlin area as needed. They also provide a hybrid model in which the student can choose whether to meet in person or virtually.

Oberlin College Part-time jobs

   Part-time employment is permitted at Oberlin College. Full-time employment is permitted during official school breaks and earned leave terms. According to the College, all other students should not work more than 20 hours per week while classes are in session. During academic year breaks when classes are not in session, students may not work more than 40 hours per week.

Oberlin College Student Safety

The mission and responsibility of Public Safety is to collaborate with the Oberlin College community to provide a safe and secure learning, living, and working environment. Campus Safety promotes a safe environment in which all members of the college community can learn, live, teach, and work. The staff responds to potential criminal incidents, suspicious activity, requests for assistance, and emergency situations 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The safety department also notifies appropriate college representatives when they are needed after regular business hours.
