Makerere University History

Makerere University is a public university located in Kampala, Uganda. It is one of the largest and third oldest universities in Uganda. It was established in the year 1922 as a technical school and it became an independent national university in 1970 and then it divided into the 3 independent universities i.e University of Nairobi, University of Dar es Salaam and Makerere University.

Makerere University Programs, Courses, and Schools

Makerere University, offers undergraduate programs, postgraduate programs, doctorate programs for the students. The University has 9 colleges 2 schools and 8 affiliated institutions. The University has more than 3,174 administrative staff including 35,000 undergraduate students and postgraduate students.

Makerere University Campuses

Makerere University has 2 campuses. The one campus is located in city of Fort Portal. The second campus is Eastern Campus located in Jinga. The University has the facilities of Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Bachelor of Information Technology, Bachelor of Development Studies, Bachelor of Tourism. The University has a library center for the students.

Makerere University Achievements

Makerere University, Prof. Kabasa commended Dr. Nakavuma and the entire research team for competing and winning the African Union Grant and contributing to the realization of the Makerere University research agenda through the SafeFish project that will impact lives nationally and globally.

The University came up with the marvelous innovation like, in 2008, Vehicle Design Summit (VDS) Teams from 35 Pre-eminent Research Universities built a 5 seater Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, The Vision two hundred LED by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Makerere University, the only African team, developed the Power Train and in-Vehicle Communication Network for the Vision 200.

Makerere University ranked 501 in World University Rankings by Times Higher Education. The University has an overall score of 4.0 stars according to students review on Studyportals, and it is one of the best university in Uganda.

The University has always been emphasis to its motto of “We build for the future”. The University also give Scholarships for the students.
