Indian Institute of Science Bangalore is also known as IISc was established by support from Jamsetji Tata and Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV. The Indian Government passed an order and then the institute was formally established in the year 1909. It was declared a deemed university in the year 1958. The institute started its functioning with two departments and today there are 38 new departments and wide range of courses at the undergraduate, graduate, masters level with 3743 enrolments.

Indian Institute of Science Bangalore is an institute comprising of 40 departments and 6 divisions where each division has its centers and departments within. The institute offers a wide range of subjects such as Biochemistry, Microbiology and Cell Biology, Physics, Astronomy, and Astrophysics Program, and numerous research centers like Divecha Centre for Climate Change and Centre for Society and Policy.

Indian Institute of Science Bangalore also provides online courses called Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) for distance learning.
