Indian Institute of Technology Madras Background

Indian Institute of Technology Madras is an engineering institute built in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. As one of the Indian Institutes of Technology, it is recognised as an Institute of utmost Importance. It was started in 1959 with financial assistance from the former government of West Germany, it was the 3rd IIT that was established by the Government of India. IIT Madras has been ranked as the top engineering institute in India for 3 years in a row by the National Institutional Ranking Framework of the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

IIT Madras is a residential institute that occupies a campus that was formerly part of the nearby Guindy National Park. The institute has approximately 550+ faculties, 8,000+ students and 1,250+ administrative and supporting staff. It has its main entrance on Chennai's Sardar Patel Road and is close to the Raj Bhavan, the office of the Governor of Tamil Nadu. The campus is 10 km from from the Chennai Airport, 12 km from the main Central Railway station, and is well-connected by city buses. Kasturba Nagar is the nearby station on the Chennai MRTS line.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras Programs

IIT Madras offers under-graduate, post-graduate and research degrees across sixteen disciplines in Engineering, Sciences, Humanities and Management. Approximately 360 faculties are belonging to science and engineering departments, and centres of the Institute are engaged in teaching, research and industrial consultancy.

The institute has 16 academic departments and advanced research centres across disciplines of engineering and sciences, with more than 100 laboratories. The academic calendar is organised around the semester. Students are evaluated continuously throughout the semester. The faculty does the evaluation, a consequence of the autonomous status granted to the Institute. Admission to the BTech and Dual Degree program is made through the Joint Entrance Examination - Advanced. IIT Madras conducted JEE Advanced in 2017. Admission to the 5-year integrated Master of Arts program is through the Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination, an IIT Madras specific exam. For the postgraduate curriculum, admission to the MTech and MS programs are through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. The Joint Admission Test to MSc is the entrance exam for the two-year M.Sc. program and other post BSc programs. MBA candidates are taken through the CAT (Common Admission Test).

Internationally, IIT Madras was ranked 264 in the QS World University Rankings of 2018. The same rankings ranked it 48 in Asia and 18 among BRICS nations. It was ranked 601-800 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2018, 103 in ASIA and 35 among BRICS and Emerging Economies University Rankings in 2017.
