National Institute of Technology Rourkela History

National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NITR), formerly Regional Engineering College Rourkela (REC Rourkela), is a publicly funded leading engineering, science and technology higher education institution located in the steel city of Rourkela, Odisha, India. NIT Rourkela was established on 15 August 1961 as the Rourkela Regional Engineering College (REC). Odisha's chief minister, Biju Patnaik, provided about 648 acres of land for it. India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, laid his foundation stone.

There are twenty departments in the institute that offer B. Tech, B. Tech - M. Dual, M. Tech, M.Sc, Integrated M.Sc, MBA, Ph.D. Recently, dual degree courses have been introduced in different disciplines. In addition to doctoral research in various subjects, the institute offers opportunities for part-time graduate studies in selected fields. There are also three academic centers and six service centers in the institute.

NIT Rourkela has up to 40 clubs or organizations for students. These clubs span and foster a variety of interests among students such as technical, cultural, literary, debating, quizzing, sports, and social service, enabling them to explore and enhance their hidden talents so far. The area of the institute is located in the center of the campus and surrounded by residential areas. The Institute's main building is located in a central area surrounded by departmental buildings. It houses all the classrooms, the Central Library and the sections of Administration and Academy. All faculty, staff, and students are provided with residential accommodation.

The 2018 and 126 Times Higher Education World University Rankings in Asia ranked NIT Rourkela 601 - 800 in the world. In 2018, NIRF ranked 18 NITs in the top 100 in which, after NIT Trichy, NIT Rourkela took second place.
