Dr. Millard Jenkins, pastor of First Baptist Church, and Dr. Jefferson D. Sandefer, president of Simmons College(Hardin-Simmons University), worked together to establish the West Texas Baptist Sanitarium in 1924. The hospital was renamed Hendrick Memorial Hospital during the Great Depression. Hendrick Memorial Hospital School of Nursing is a fitting name for the school. In 1970, the school's name was changed to Mary Meeks School of Nursing.
