Stellenbosch University History

Established in the year 1918, Stellenbosch University is a University committed to research. It is located in Stellenbosch, South Africa.  The students of the University wear maroon uniforms be it for sports or their blazer giving them the nickname “maties” originating from the African word “tamatie” meaning tomato.

The Stellenbosch University consists of about 150 departments divided amongst 10 faculties. It also has more than 40+ research institutions. The faculties that are situated on the main campus are Arts, Social Sciences, Education, Law, Economic, Science, AgriSciences, Theology, and Management Sciences, Engineering. The faculties and schools that are not situated on the main campus are Health Sciences and Medicine situated in Tygerberg, Military Science situated in Saldanha Bay, University of Stellenbosch Business School situated in Bellville.

The Stellenbosch campus comprises of many appealing features such as sports facilities that include a stadium, swimming pools, game fields including one for football and two for hockey and a gym. The collections at the University library are scattered around the campus in the form of a computerized database that is accessible even outside the main facility. Apart from this, the University also boasts of two concert halls, a 430-seat theatre, and an Amphitheatre.
