University of Karachi History

The University of Karachi also known as UoK is a public university based in the city of Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. The university was established in the year 1951 following the establishment of Pakistan as a sovereign state in order to provide higher education and research facilities to its citizens. The teaching started in the year 1953 with the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Science.

University of Karachi comprises on 9 faculties offering a wide range of courses such as Arabic, Bengali, International Relations, Islamic History, Criminology, Visual Studies, Urdu, Persian, Chemical Engineering, Commerce, Public Administration, Education, Law, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Genetics, Computer Science, Zoology, Agriculture, and Microbiology to name a few.

The University of Karachi is also regarded as a hub for researchers and the academic community. The research centres include Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Applied Economics Research Centre, Center for Digital Forensic Science and Technology, Center of Excellence for Women Study, Center of Excellence in Marine Biology, Center for Molecular Genetics, Centre for Plant Conservation, Confucius Institute, Institute of Clinical Psychology, Institute of Environmental Studies, Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre, Institute of Space and Planetary Astrophysics, Institute for Sustainable Halophyte Utilization, and Marine Reference & Research Collection Center.

University of Karachi Campuses

The University of Karachi is located 12 kilometers from the city of Karachi and is spread over an area of 1279 acres. The university campus is home to nine faculties, administrative buildings, and a library comprising of 400,000 volumes some of which date back to the 16th Century.

The University of Karachi also offers digital resources such as e-books and e-periodicals through its E-library. The university also has a dedicated career counseling desk to assist students with jobs, placements, and internships. Sports, leisure, recreational, and shopping facilities are also available on-campus. 

University of Karachi Achievements

The University of Karachi is one of the few universities in Pakistan to have its own publishing unit called the Karachi University Press. It publishes books, texts, periodicals, and other academic materials in-house for various universities through the Bureau of Composition, Compilation, and Translation.

The University of Karachi has grown to be an institute of high repute and standing in a very short span of time. The university is ranked highly in Pakistan and many of their academic staff possess Ph.D. degrees from institutes of international repute. The university is also highly ranked for its research and development activities.

University of Karachi USP

University of Karachi’s International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences was awarded Center of Excellence 2016 by UNESCO. The research center currently enrolls over 500 students and contributes heavily to the R&D activities in the country.

The University of Karachi has a high acceptance rate and the university is a member of Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). The tuition fee is affordable and there are multiple scholarships, grants, and bursaries available for exceptional students.

Quentin D’Silva (former Chairman and Chief Executive of Shell Pakistan), Masuma Hasan (first female Ph.D. and first female Federal Secretary of Pakistan), Abdul Qadeer Khan (Scientist and metallurgical engineer, founder of the uranium program of the country's atomic bomb projects), and Arman Sabir (BBC and Dawn journalist).
