University of New England
UNE is a private research university in Maine with campuses in Portland and Biddeford, as well as a study abroad campus in Tangier, Morocco. UNE is Maine's largest private university and the state's largest educator of healthcare professionals.
University of New England History
The history of the University of New England is rich and varied, reflecting the determination, creativity, and resourcefulness of its founders as well as the history of Maine and New England. It's a wonderful story that begins in 1939 with Franciscan monks on the banks of the Saco River establishing the College Seraphique, a high school and junior college for boys of Quebecois descent. St. Francis College was established in 1952 as a four-year liberal arts college. In the late 1970s, as the college struggled financially, necessity and opportunity met in the form of the New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. The College of Osteopathic Medicine was established on the St. Francis campus, and the two institutions merged to form the University of New England in 1978.

The University of New England is Maine's largest private university and the state's largest educator of healthcare professionals. It is divided into five colleges, which together offer over 70 undergraduate, graduate, online, and professional degrees. University of New England is best known for its program in the sciences and health sciences, but it also offers degrees in the marine sciences, data science, environmental science, mathematics, business, education, the humanities, and a variety of other fields. Its College of Osteopathic Medicine is Maine's only medical school, and its College of Dental Medicine is northern New England's only dental college.

USP/Achievements of University of New England is that institutions are classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities - High research activity". In have recent years, UNE's program received national and international recognition: UNE is ranked in the 2021 edition of "The Best 386 Colleges" by Princeton Review. In the 2023 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Ranking, UNE is ranked 285. UNE is ranked #452 on Forbes' list of "America's Top Colleges for 2019." The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education ranked UNE 325th among American colleges and universities in 2017. The Brookings Institution ranked UNE second among Maine universities and colleges in terms of increasing students' career earnings in 2015. The New England Commission on Higher Education has accredited the University of New England.

University of New England Infrastructure & Services
Campus
The University of New England has three campuses that offer students a variety of learning environments. The university's two campuses in coastal Maine, USA, house undergraduate, graduate, and professional program, while the Tangier Campus in Morocco offers a semester-abroad opportunity. The Biddeford Campus is 540 acres (220 ha) in size, with 0.75 mile (1.21 km) of ocean frontage where the Saco River meets the Atlantic Ocean. The Harold Alfond Center for Health Sciences, the Pickus Center for Biomedical Research, and the Marine Science Center are among the campus's 26 buildings. Portland Campus is a national historic district covering 41 acres (17 ha). It is in a suburban neighborhood, just a short drive from downtown Portland. The Westbrook College of Health Professions and the College of Dental Medicine are located on the UNE Portland Campus. The first class of the College of Dental Medicine, which is housed in the $14.5 million Oral Health Center, graduated in 2017. It is the state's only dental college.
Library
The Library Services at the University of New England are essential to the intellectual life of the university community. They foster a vibrant learning environment by providing access to scholarly collections and resources; providing services that encourage inquiry and independent, lifelong learning; providing welcoming, interactive spaces and infrastructure that enhance the educational experience and support the university's information needs; and preserving specific special collections. Larger special collections are also housed at UNE Libraries, including the Maine Women Writers Collection, the New England Osteopathic Heritage Center, the Sandra and Bernard Featherman University Archives, and the UNE Art Galleries.

Housing services
The living on campus department at the University of New England provides housing services. The University of New England has five residence halls for first-year students only: Assisi, Avila, Padua, Siena, Featherman, and Frederick. Upperclassmen live in Champlain, Sokokis, East, and West Halls in suite-style arrangements.

Medical services
The University of New England takes pride in providing high-quality health care. UNE's health centers provide health centers on both its Biddeford and Portland campuses for students' convenience and ease of access. To provide comprehensive services comparable to primary care offices, the centres are staffed with highly qualified practitioners and support staff. Appointments are strongly recommended due to the high volume of patients seen daily, though walk-ins are welcome and accommodated when possible. Visas & immigration support
The University of New England assists students with visa and immigration matters. The Designated School Official (DSO) from the Global Education Program contacts international students once they have been accepted to UNE and have paid the initial deposit. The DSO will issue a Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status, also known as Form I-20, after receiving and reviewing the requested information and documentation. Country-specific instructions for applying for the F-1 student visa from a US Embassy or Consulate abroad will be included with Form I-20.

Sports and Fitness
Finley Recreation Center provides sports and fitness facilities to the University of New England. The Beverly Burpee Finley Recreation Center has a gymnasium, a fitness center, a group exercise room, and full locker rooms. The facilities host a variety of recreational, wellness, and fitness program, as well as intramural sports. The fitness center has cardio equipment as well as a strength and conditioning area. Personal training sessions, fitness assessments, equipment orientations, fitness training programs, nutrition and stress management programs are examples of professional services.

Students counseling center provides health and well-being services at the University of New England. Individual evidence-based, solution-focused short-term counseling and services are provided by the Center for on-campus undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in degree-granting program. Ethnicity, spirituality, culture, sexual orientation, gender, disability, learning differences, and body image are all issues that its counsellors are sensitive to. Counseling sessions are private and do not appear on your academic record.

Part time jobs
Students at the University of New England can work part-time while attending classes. Many work-study positions are posted by campus offices on Handshake, the Career Center's online job posting site. To apply for open positions, you must upload an updated, college-level resume to your Handshake profile; once reviewed, you will receive either constructive feedback or an approval notice. Some international students may require extra work authorization as well as a social security number.
