University of Azores

The University of Azores was founded in 1976. It is a public research university situated in the Azores, Portugal. It was established to focus on Higher Education in the region.

University History

In 1976 the University of Azores was founded. In 1975 a small group of academics and elites found different ways in order to lower costs, and distances and reduce the impact of national government centralization. At this time the central government suggested the establishment of a University Center, which was refused by the President of the Regional Junta, General Altino de Magalhães, as he thought the people would only accept a formal University.

A working group was established by the ministry on 14 October 1976 to debate this issue and provide solutions for same. On 9 January 1976, it was announced to establish the University Institution of the Azores. On 25 July 1980, the institution was renamed as the University of the Azores.

The University of Azores is a Portuguese university located in the Archipelago of the Azores, located in Portugal. The campus is settled in three areas located in different islands- Ponta Delgada campus is in S. Miguel Island; Angra do Heroismo campus is in Terceira and Horta campus is in Faial. The university is situated in the natural biodiversity and beauty of the islands. Visa and Immigration Support-

The various points to keep in mind while applying for visa are-

  • Two passport-size photographs in color with white background. (3.5cm / 4.5cm). Please do not staple.
  • The Passport must have a validity of 1 Year
  • Proof of acceptance / confirmation / registration in a course of study / research work /training program in a recognized University/Institute/company.
  • Police Clearance Certificate issued by Passport Office 
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover all expenses during the stay in Portugal (Bank Statement for the last three months, if employed Salary slips / Income Tax Returns etc. of self/parents). Funds must be deposited in a National or European Bank.
  • Proof of educational/professional qualifications along with Marksheets of each semester/year.
  • No Objection Certificate from the current Institute/School (If Applicable). Applicable for Training or Exchange Students. Or Recommendation Certificate issued by the last education attended the institute.
  • Ticket Reservation (which shows the date of departure to Portugal)
  • Proof of accommodation/declaration from university. (Must be booked in University Hotel or Dormitory)
  • Overseas travel medical insurance is valid for all Schengen countries. The insurance has to cover the applicant for at least 30,000 Euros or 50 ,000 UDS, The policy has to clearly specify the period of validity and has to cover the entire duration of the trip including the date of arrival and departure.
  • Minors below 18 years traveling alone must submit the written consent of their parents /guardians.
  • Declaration form granting SEF (Foreign and Borders Office) permission for consulting criminal record in Portugal (not required for minors below sixteen years) (Forms available at VFS Global)

A security desk is located in the lobby of each residence hall, which assists 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to ensure the safety and identification of those entering and leaving the campus buildings. Students can call an officer to escort them anywhere on campus 24/7.
