Bogazici University History
Officially established in 1971, the Bogazici University is a public university in Istanbul, Turkey. It is the first American higher education institution founded outside the United States of America. The university was founded as Robert College in 1863 by Dr.Cyrus Hamlin and Mr. Christopher Rheinlander Robert. Though the university is completely under the Turkish administration it still maintains strong links with the American education system.
Bogazici University Programs, Courses and Schools
The university constantly attracts greatest number of applicants via the YGS-LYS (entrance exam for the Turkish Universities). Through its 4 faculties, 2 schools and 6 institutes the university offers 29 undergraduate, 65 graduate and 33 PhD programs. It has a total of more than 12,350 students enrolled in undergraduate courses and 4,980 students enrolled in graduate programs. The university also has about 300 agreements with various universities across the world and hosts many foreign students. The university has 437 full time faculty members, 82 instructors and 88 foreign lecturers. It is popular for its programs in engineering, applied science, education and social sciences.
Bogazici University Campuses
The university currently has 6 main campuses: South campus, North campus, Hisar campus, Uçaksavar campus, Saritepe campus and Kandilli campus. The South campus hosts some of the oldest buildings of the university. The North campus, Uçaksavar campus and Hisar campus are rather recently acquired campuses and are in the close proximity of the South campus. The Saritepe campus is approximately 23 miles from the South campus and the Kandili campus hosts the observatory.
The university has a fine research infrastructure with 32 research centers and 141 research laboratories. Approximately 4,500 students visit the library daily and access more than 4,81,000 books, 79,900 journals, 32,56,000 e-books, 190 databases.
Bogazici University Achievements
Bogazici university was ranked 67th by Times Higher Education in the Asia University Rankings and 501-600th in the World University Rankings. The research intensity (based on the number of papers output relative to the university size is high) has been categorized as ‘High’ by the Top Universities (QS ranking). The university is associated with some of the noted academicians in the field of history, mathematics, physics and economics. It has produced successful academicians, politicians and businessmen and artists.
