Indian Institute of Technology History
The Indian Institute of Technology (ISM), Dhanbad is in Dhanbad, India - based public engineering and research institution. Before being converted into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and an Institute of National Importance, it was formerly known as the Indian School of Mines and was a Central University. IIT is located in India's mineral-rich region, Dhanbad City. It is the third oldest institute to be converted into an IIT. It was established by the British Indian Government on the lines of the Royal School of Mines – London and was formally inaugurated on 9 December 1926 by Lord Irwin, then Viceroy of India.
Indian Institute of Technology Programs, Courses, and Schools
IIT (ISM), with a focus on engineering, offers courses in engineering, pure science, management, and humanities. There are 18 departments and five interdisciplinary centers within the Institute. The University Grants Commission granted the status of "Center of Advanced Studies" to the Mining Engineering Department. JEE Advanced qualified students will be admitted to the B.Tech, Dual Degree and Integrated courses. Admission to the M.Tech courses is done either through the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) or through the Institute's special examination. The Common Admission Test (CAT) is used to admit to the MBA program. Entry to M.Sc. Tech. And doctoral courses are conducted through the Institute's examinations.

The IIT (ISM) campus is surrounded by mining - related offices such as the Mining and Fuel Research Central Institute and the DGMS and Bharat Coking Coal Limited headquarters. Academic buildings, student hostels with 100% residential facilities for faculty, staff and students are included in the IIT (ISM) campus.
IIT (ISM) is home to the Geological Museum, Seismic Observatory, Data Processing Laboratory, Remote Sensing Laboratory, and Long Wall Mine Gallery. The Central Library is automated and provides services for over 5,500 users from 17 departments and centers seven days a week.
The library houses 80,000 books, 8,000 Ph.D. theses, and dissertations, 35,000 bound volumes of newspapers, etc. In each department, there is a central computer lab and computer labs. The campus has sports facilities for outdoor and indoor use such as athletics, cricket, soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, squash, chess, and table tennis. A swimming pool, gym, and music club are available at the Student Activity Center (SAC). There are different clubs for drama, dance, music, quizzing, literature, photography, robotics, film making, etc.
