University of Colombo History

The University of Colombo is a public university located in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is one of the oldest university of modern higher education in Sri Lanka. It was established in the year in 1921 as the University of Colombo, affiliated to the University of London.

University of Colombo Programs, Courses, and Schools

The University of Colombo offers undergraduate programs, postgraduate programs, and diploma courses. The University also offers certification courses, training programs and online and distance courses are been taught to the students. The University has 9 faculties with 56 academic departments, 7 institutes, and 8 centres and units. The University has more than 1,600 academic staff including 9,100 undergraduate students and 2,504 postgraduate students.

University of Colombo Campuses

The University of Colombo, the main campus is Sri Palee campus located at Wewala, Srilanka. The University of Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology are located in Kumaratunga Munidasa Mawatha. The University library and other activities is situated between Thurstan Road and Reed Avenue. The Faculty of Medicine is located in Kynsey Road and Postgraduate Institute of Medical is settled at Norris Canal Road.

University of Colombo Achievements

The University of Colombo, student Mr. S.H.D.R Sulalith was honored first in Uva Provincial Music and Drama Competition in 2001. K.D Woshika Ruchini won a scholarship for a student exchange program at La Trobe University, Australia in 2011. Pujitha De Mel (lecturer) won Best Script Writer, Best Director and Upcoming Director awards for “ASINAMALI” at National Drama Festival in 2001.

The University of Colombo, ranked 10th in top universities in South Asia. The university ranked #801-1000 in World University Rankings. The University always emphasis to its motto of “Buddhih Sarvatra Bhrajate” which means “Wisdom shines forth everywhere”.
