University of Silesia History

The University of Silesia also known as the University of Silesia in Katowice is a Polish university in Katowice, Silesia Province. The university was established in 1928 as Pedagogical Institute in Katowice and was subsequently merged with higher Pedagogical School in 1950 and branch of Jagiellonian University in 1962. The university adopted its name in 1968 and currently enrolls over 27,000 students.

University of Silesia Programs, Courses, and Schools

The University of Silesia offers 72 programs at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels across 12 faculties and over 230 specializations. The university is also home to the School of Modern Languages, School of Natural Science and Technology, and a Language Teacher Training College.

The University of Silesia offers programs in a wide range of subjects such as Fine Arts, Music, Biology, Ethnology, Material Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Earth Sciences, Social Sciences, Pedagogy, Psychology, Law, Radio and Television, and Theology to name a few.

The University of Silesia has its campus located in Katowice, Silesia Province, Poland. The university’s Scientific Information Centre and Academic Library caters to the students and the academics and offers numerous titles in both digital and print formats. The library is also designed to be a disabled student-friendly.

The University of Silesia also comprises of a Distance Learning School and a publishing house in addition to student union and clubs, gardens and parks, laboratories, sports facilities, and numerous leisure and recreational options.

The University of Silesia is affiliated to many European bodies to collaborate on teaching practices and research and development activities. Some of the affiliations are European Physics Education Network, European Chemistry Thematic Network, EUA, European Association of Schools of Social Work, and European Law Faculties Association.

The University of Silesia is also placed in 801-1000 bracket worldwide by the prestigious Time Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

University of Silesia participates in the Erasmus program and has signed over 600 agreements with institutions like the University of Alberta, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, University of Buenos Aires, University of Zurich, and the University of Barcelona to offers international mobility to its students through study abroad programs.

The University of Silesia has a variable acceptance rate of 30 to 40% which makes it a selective institution. The university also offers many programs which are taught in both English and Polish.
