University Putra Malaysia was established in the year 1931. Its main campus is in Serdang, Selangor. It is accredited by the official agencies as one of Malaysia's most significant research institutes offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses with a priority on agricultural sciences and its related fields.

The university since its inception as Universiti Pertanian Malaysia has had two branch campuses apart from the main campus. The Medicine and Health Sciences faculty maintains a campus complex adjacent to a local hospital in Serdang.
