Under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani is a private higher education institution and a deemed university. The Institute is one of the six Indian ' Eminence Institutes ' recognized by India's government in 2018. Founded in 1929, the Birla Education Trust became a degree college and later offered postgraduate courses. The electronics master program began in 1955.

BITS Pilani offers four - year integrated first - degree programs in engineering, technology, and pharmacy, a master's degree in arts and science and technology master's degree. BITS Pilani offers masters in engineering, pharmacy, public health, and management.

The campus has 11,245 square meters of classrooms (121,040 square ft) and 7,069 square meters of laboratories (76,090 square ft). Campus Pilani has India's first museum of technology, the Birla Museum. Built in 1954, it showcases achievements in technology. BITS has an auditorium of 2,535 square meters (27,290 sq ft) decorated with paintings by art and decoration students.

 In India, the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked BITS Pilani 19 overall in 2018, 17 among universities, 17 in the engineering ranking and fifth in the pharmacy ranking in India.
